RESEARCH IN NATURAL MEDICINE
The physicians at the University Health Clinic Specialty Care and Research Center (UHC SCRC) are committed to the evolution of medicine through the scientific evaluation of emerging therapies. As well as pursuing pilot research investigations through the University Health Clinic Specialty Care and Research Center, Drs. Ready, Mischley, Standish and Sweet are working in collaboration with other prominent institutions such as the University of Washington and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to evaluate therapies for the prevention and treatment of chronic and life-threatening diseases. Current areas of research focus at UHC SCRC include breast cancer, neurological diseases, type II diabetes, environmental medicine and hepatitis C.

RESEARCH IN BREAST CANCER
Dr. Ready is focusing her research on breast cancer prevention. As an N.I.H.-funded post-doctoral research fellow and in collaboration with scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Dr. Ready is evaluating whether the use of anti-inflammatory medications plays a role in the development and progression of breast cancer.

Dr. Ready is also the lead investigator on study evaluating the effect of fiber and water intake on breast cancer risk. Other research interests include inflammation and cardiovascular disease and alternative therapies for inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Ready is completing her Masters in Public Health in Epidemiology at the University of Washington.

RESEARCH FOCUSING ON NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES
Dr. Laurie Mischley has made the evaluation of alternative therapies for neurological diseases a focus of her practice. There are hundreds of studies demonstrating that patients with Parkinson's disease have lower levels of the important antioxidant glutathione. The evaluation of glutathione as a treatment in Parkinson's is a critical area of research. Dr. Mischley is co-investigator with prominent Seattle neurologists in a proposed study to evaluate the use of glutathione in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Dr. Mischley is an adjunct faculty member at Bastyr University and trains future doctors in the use of alternative laboratory diagnostics in naturopathic medical practice.

RESEARCH IN HEPATITIS C
Dr. Standish is Senior Research Scientist and the former Director of the Bastyr University Research Institute. Trained at the Downstate Medical Center in New York and the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Standish received her neuroscience doctoral degree in 1978 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in psychopharmacology at Emory University in 1979-1980. Prior to her work in natural medicine research, she served for two years as Visiting Scientist and Senior Fellow at the University of Washington's Department of Physiology and Biophysics.

With a 25-year career as a research scientist with numerous publications and appointments, Dr. Standish has a commitment to the evaluation of natural therapies within the scientific paradigm. Currently, Dr. Standish is principal investigator on several research projects in the areas of hepatitis C, immunity and mind/body interaction. Dr. Standish has recently received a faculty appointment at the University of Washington.
